Flowing into the Bay of Bengal, Chilika Lake is a magnificent brackish water lagoon. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India, the second largest in the world, and was proudly designated the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1981.
Chilika is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. During peak season, the lagoon hosts over 160 species. Birds travel incredibly vast distances—up to 12,000 km—from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, the Aral Sea, the Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, and the Himalayas just to reach this sanctuary.
Beyond birds, the lagoon supports about 37 species of reptiles and amphibians, and is home to roughly 135 rare and endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins. Its highly productive ecosystem and rich fishery resources sustain the livelihood of over 150,000 fisher-folk living in 132 villages along its shores and islands.
